Leslie A. Murphy, CPA
Leslie A. Murphy is President and CEO of Murphy Consulting, Inc, providing services to businesses, professional firms and not for profit entities in the areas of corporate governance, workforce development, culture enhancement and staff retention.
She is a member of the Board of Kelly Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: KELYA, KELYB), a world leader in human resource solutions, operating in 37 countries and territories, with revenue approximating $6 billion. She is also a member of the Board of Vision Service Plan, a $4 billion Company and the largest vision insurance provider in the country, with international frame manufacturing and distribution operations and a network of laboratories fabricating eyewear. She is a qualified financial expert and chairs the audit committee on both of these Boards, in addition to serving on the Compensation and Governance Committees, among others.
Murphy is a retired partner and former member of the senior leadership team of Plante & Moran, the nation’s 11th largest public accounting and management consulting firm. The last eight years of her career, she had operating responsibility for all of the client service lines of the firm, including Audit, Tax and all the Consulting lines of business. She previously served as an audit partner with Plante & Moran, specializing in real estate, construction and education, as well as the managing partner for the Grand Rapids, Michigan office of the firm.
In October 2005, she became only the third woman to Chair the 350,000-member American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Murphy’s initial board term at the AICPA began in 2001, just as the corporate scandals at Enron and WorldCom came to national attention. She was involved at the policy level as the profession responded to the changing environment for the next 6 years. She also continues her service to the profession and stays current with the developments in the Regulatory system as a member of the AICPA Governing Council, a member of the Assurance Services Executive Committee, with a focus on Enterprise Risk Management, and the Commission on Accounting Higher Education, entitled “Pathways to a Profession”.
Murphy also contributes significant time to the community, principally in a Board capacity. She currently serves as Chair of the Board of St. John Providence Health System, a $2 Billion Health System operating in Southeastern Michigan. She also Chairs the Board of United Way of Southeastern Michigan and serves as a member of the Board and Past Chair of the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce, the largest local Chamber of Commerce in the United States.
Murphy is a graduate of the University of the University of Michigan Business School with a BBA in Accounting and Honorary Doctorates from Walsh College and Cleary University. She holds a Certificate of Completion of the NACD Corporate Directors Institute and the Director Professionalism Master Class. She is the recipient of numerous awards and resides with her husband in the metropolitan Detroit area.
